Excellence Through the Arts (ETTA) is in its fourteenth year of offering the "Artist in Residence" program where one of our five ETTA artists will come and work in your school for a duration of five and a half days.
The residency begins with a co-planning session where half a day (2.5 hours) is set aside for the artist to meet with the teachers involved to plan the specifics of the lessons to be taught. After that, there will be 5 days (25 hours) of hands-on, creative collaboration in the classrooms between the resident artist and the selected teachers and their students. In each case, the role of the artist is to share insights into the skills, processes and ideas in a particular art form while providing an outlet for creative expression. The end result is for students and teachers to gain a new avenue to demonstrate their learning in different subject areas. It is the desire of ETTA for teachers to be fully immersed into the arts experience and have the confidence to recreate it on their own in the future.
To participate, each school is asked to browse through the "Meet Our Artists" tab and choose a first choice and a second artist (1 Visual Arts & 1 Performing Arts) who are most fitting to their school goals. Please note that we will be granting equal numbers of Visual Arts (6)and Performing Arts (6) residencies. It is a good idea to contact the artists directly to discuss the specific desires of your school and any additional costs to the project before completing your application. After, please submit the application form to [email protected]
For the 2023-2024 school year, we are pleased to offer 12 grants. Schools in the Westside Zone will be given first priority to access the funds. After that, all schools will have the opportunity to apply for the remaining grants, which will be allotted based on a lottery system. In order for this program to be sustainable, each school is responsible for a percentage of the cost of the artist's residency; SD23, through its ETTA foundation, will cover the remaining portion. The cost covered by each school is $600, while the district covers the remaining $1600 plus GST. Please keep in mind that schools may hire any of the artists for additional days for the full cost of $400 per day. Also, each school is to provide one half-day TTOC coverage for the participating teachers to meet with the resident artist on the co-planning day on a rotational basis, unless other arrangements can be made. Please also note that any materials for the classroom collaborations will be covered by the school.
